Mash Strike Water Temperature Calculator
(As mentioned on the 21 May 09 Basic Brewing Radio podcast)
Recently upgraded to include imperial units

To calculate the required temperature of your mash strike water enter your data into the yellow boxes and select your input units from the green drop down boxes. After you have filled in all the yellow boxes hit 'Calculate'.

Mass of malt

Temperature of malt

Amount of strike water

Desired mash temperature

Temperature of Strike Water required
˚C
˚F

Explanation of the Calculator.

This calculator uses the formulae below. More explanation will be posted soon.

Strike Temp =

desired mash temp x (litres water + (0.4 x kg malt)) – (0.4 x kg malt x malt temp)
litres water

The above equation uses kg and ˚C units. If you use different units the backend of the calculator converts to these metric units first before running the equation. I will get some more explanation up soon, but the basic theory behind the calculator is that it takes 0.4 times the amount of energy to heat up 1kg of malt compared to 1kg of water.
