Beer too cloudy?

Postby TheMarketPorter » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:35 pm

I brewed a Little Creatures Bright Ale clone 2 weeks ago (Brewcraft kit). It has been in the fermenter for about 2 weeks. It tastes pretty good but does not look like something you would drink - it is pretty cloudy and still a bit 'thick'. It has quite a few bubbles too. My first brew was an english bitter which was very clear and normall looking after around 10 days. Does the cloudiness sound OK? Does it need more time to settle down or has it got an infection? It does not smell off but has been kept around 22c for the past 2 weeks. I dont have a temperature controller for my fridge yet although starting to wish I did! Should I cool it down in the fridge for a week to get rid of the cloudiness? Any guidance/tips would be appreciated.

Receipe was

1.5kg Black Rock East India Pale Ale
1.5kg Black Rock Light Liquid Malt
250g crushed Carapils Malt
150g Wheat Dried Malt
15g Amarillo Hops
15g Saaz Hops
Safale US05

21 litres water

OG 1050
FG 1014

Don't worry, it'll be fine. If it tastes OK and smells OK then it's not going to be infected. It takes a bit longer to settle when you start adding grains (particularly wheat grain) and hops. I'd just bottle it up as I quite like cloudy beers but you can leave it in the fermenter for another week if you really want it to settle.

Thanks Pete - will give it a few more days and then bottle. I thought the grains might be a factor.

Hey marketporter,

In my experience us-05 will take a while to clear up. Especially compared to the english ale yeasts I use in my bitters. The cloudiness sounds like normal us-05 behaviour to me and as pete said if it smells and tastes ok then you have nothing to worry about. My 2 cents.

Cheers, Jim

Chilling it down can definitely help clear up a beer so might be worth a shot. The closer to freezing temp you can get it without freezing it is best.

Thanks guys, I am going to cool the beer right down in the fridge to see if it clears up a bit and then bottle it over the weekend. The main thing is that it tastes very good - much better overall than my first brew, the Coopers English Bitter which is now about a month old. It tastes OK but a bit one dimensional and a bit too gassy too for an ale but still drinkable.
